The Government Muzzled Scientists

Happer, director of energy research at the U.S. Department of Energy for two years, was asked to leave at the end of May. Although he was a political appointee, he had expected to remain until his replacement was nominated, since the Clinton administration had asked him to stay on in January. But he was pushed out two months beforehand. "I was told that science was not going to intrude on policy," he says.  From Reason Magazine article

WASHINGTON, DC – Award winning Princeton University Physicist Dr. Will Happer, who was reportedly fired by former Vice President Al Gore in 1993 for failing to adhere to Gore’s scientific views, has now declared man-made global warming fears “mistaken.”

AL Gore Fired Scientist for Dissent

Following a debate on climate change at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry last year at which Taylor expressed his contrarian ideas, Gov. Ted Kulongoski warned him to quit representing himself as the state climatologist (there is some dispute about how official the title is and whether the governor has the power to remove it).

In February 2007, Kulongoski asked OSU's president to stop Taylor from calling himself the state climatologist because of Taylor's skeptical stance on global warming.  . . .  Taylor, 60, said he will retire May 1 but will continue to work as an independent consultant from his home in Corvallis.

Oregon’s Governor Pressures Scientist for Dissent

On Monday, it escalated further when University of Washington researcher and State Climatologist Philip Mote stripped a colleague of his title as associate state climatologist, triggering concerns that scientific dissent is being quashed. Losing the title doesn't affect the man's employment at the UW. read the whole story at : http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003618979_warming15m.html

EPA Hides Report Critical of AGW Warming

From a leaked copy of EPA’s hidden report:

The draft endangerment TSD is largely a dated document which relies heavily on the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). A lot has happened in those intervening three years since then . The IPCC's AR4 was published in the spring of 2007, but to meet the deadline for inclusion in the AR4, scientific papers had to be

published by late 2005/early 2006 . So, in the rapidly evolving field of climate change, by grounding its TSD in the IPCC AR4 the EPA is largely relying on scientific findings that are, by early 2009, largely 3 years or more out of date . The six developments described here should in our view greatly influence any assessment of "vulnerability, risk, and impacts" of climate change

within the U .S. Therefore, the extensive portions of the EPA's Endangerment TSD which are based upon the old science are no longer appropriate and need to be revised.

WSJ: The EPA Silences a Climate Skeptic

The analysis noted that global temperatures were on a downward trend. It pointed out problems with climate models. It highlighted new research that contradicts apocalyptic scenarios. "We believe our concerns and reservations are sufficiently important to warrant a serious review of the science by EPA," the report read.

"The idea that warming temperatures will cause Greenland to rapidly shed its ice has been greatly diminished by new results indicating little evidence for operations of such processes," Carlin observed.

This did not sit well with his superiors, who essentially told him to go to his room and shut up. On March 12, Carlin's director, Al McGartland, forbade him from having "any direct communication" with anyone outside his office about his study.

Mitchell Taylor is a Polar Bear researcher who has caught more polar bears and worked on more polar bear groups than any other, but he was effectively ostracized from the Polar Bear Specialist Group (PBSG) specifically because he has publicly expressed doubts that there is a crisis due to carbon dioxide emissions.

New York Times hit piece on the author of the above report.

Notice there is not one word about his science, only criticism of him & his use of web sites as sources (web sites have become the best source of skeptic’s information and many are maintained by scientists that publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals. The famous “hockey stick” was broken by a web site and later verified faulty by the National Academy of Sciences.)
